Digital Signature Certificate: what to check before you apply

A practical checklist to help applicants confirm the right DSC requirement, verification route and token readiness before starting.

A Digital Signature Certificate is used to authenticate digital filings and electronic documents on supported portals. Before beginning an application, it helps to confirm a few details so the process is smoother.

Start with the applicant type. An individual requirement and an organisation-related requirement may follow different documentation or authorisation steps. The intended portal or use case should also be clear, because the required certificate type can depend on where and how it will be used.

If you already have a PKI USB token, check whether it is functional and compatible before purchasing another one. For renewals, remember that an expired certificate is not simply extended; a fresh certificate issuance process is generally required.

Keep the applicant's mobile number, email address and required identity or organisation documents available for verification. If any requirement is unclear, confirm it before starting rather than making assumptions that may cause rework.
